About
Carlton Abner

I’m Carlton Abner and I’m running for JCCC Board of Trustees because I believe in people — in their stories, their struggles, and most importantly, their potential.

My passion for people has been a part of every stop along my professional journey, from where I began as an ER/Trauma nurse to where I am now, serving as an associate provost and a member of the senior leadership team at Kansas City University, the nation's 4th largest medical school.

That passion for people fuels my commitment to protecting access to education and creating real pathways to the jobs and skills our communities need now.

I bring with me a quarter century of military experience, and a plethora of leadership and operational experience. I am deeply committed to and am a firm believer in the power of listening and building bridges.

Whether you’re from a rural town or the urban core, your future matters! I’ll work to make sure you feel heard, supported, and set up to succeed.

My Focus

My focus is simple. I will champion workforce and community needs. I believe the most effective route to meeting those needs include the following:

Opportunity

I will work to ensure that the education provided is relevant and is tied to what our communities need now.

Affordability

I will do so in a way that retains the affordability of this resource for both the students and taxpayers.

I will work with others to innovate and fuel ways for students in our region to continue to have access to this invaluable resource.

Core Values

I will put students at the center of our efforts and work collaboratively to support their needs.

I will be responsive to the unique needs of today’s college student and support them in achieving their academic and vocational goals.

I will champion an environment where the faculty and staff feel valued and are engaged so that they feel positioned to support the students.
